Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: Do you run online sessions?

A: Yes. I can run one to one online session from my office to the safety and comfort of your own home. All you need is a smart phone - it's easy. Call me for more details.

  • Q: What is clinical hypnotherapy?

A: It is the application of psychotherapy whilst in the state of hypnosis. Some psychologists say that 90% of our behaviour is run by the unconscious mind and is therefore outside of our control, so certain therapeutic interventions are only possible within the state of hypnosis.

  • Q: What is hypnosis?

A: It is a natural state of focused attention and happens naturally to all of us during the course of a normal day, for example day-dreaming, watching TV, reading a book. Have you ever been driving your car and passed your turn-off because you haven’t been paying attention? Hypnosis is a perfectly natural, voluntary state of deep relaxation, into which you are guided by the hypnotherapist. During hypnosis your conscious and unconscious minds are working together, which makes therapy so effective.

  • Q: Will I be asleep or unconscious?

A: No. You will remain conscious throughout. In fact, due to your level of focussed attention, you will actually be in a high state of alertness and completely in control of the process.

  • Q: I’ve seen stage hypnosis – will I be able to moonwalk like Michael Jackson or will you get me to cluck like a chicken?

A: No. Stage hypnosis is an entertainment form and the participants are specially chosen for their willingness to perform. A clinical hypnotherapist has no power or control over you, your free will is still intact, and you would not do anything that conflicted with your morals or beliefs or that you would not do in normal life.

  • Q: Could I get stuck in hypnosis?

A: No. You could no more get stuck in hypnosis than get stuck reading a book. Even if the hypnotherapist left the room and never came back, you would naturally leave the trance.

  • Q: Will I tell you all my secrets?

A: No. You will be in control at all times and need only divulge any information you wish to.

  • Q: Can anyone be hypnotised?

A: Yes, if they want to be, can concentrate for a reasonable amount of time and are in the range of normal intelligence.

  • Q: What can hypnosis be used for?

A: Hypnotherapy can be used for many things, including changing bad habits, getting rid of unwanted weight, phobias, preparation for surgery, increasing self-esteem, depression, chronic illness, increasing your fertility and so on. The list is not exhaustive, so please call or email to see if hypnotherapy could help you with your problem.

  • Q: How many sessions will I need?

A: This depends on the reason you have sought help. Hypnotherapists who are registered with the General Hypnotherapy Association are bound by its ethics and agree to help the client in the least number of sessions necessary.

  • Q: Can a hypnotherapist guarantee results?

A: No. Hypnotherapy is not a panacea for all ills, however it can be an effective treatment for many problems where psychological factors are present. Just as a GP could not guarantee a prescribed tablet might work, nor can a hypnotherapist guarantee results because all people are different.

  • Q: Is hypnotherapy an alternative therapy?

A: No. We believe that hypnotherapy should be used as a complementary therapy. Clients should always consult their GP first and follow any prescribed medication.

  • Q: How much do sessions cost?

A: The first consultation is free* and then all subsequent weekday sessions (of up to an hour) are £97. Payments are made at the end of each session by cash, cheque or credit card. *Smoking cessation costs £350 in total for an initial consultation and a further longer session of approximately 1 hour 30 minutes (payment for which is due at the end of the initial session).

  • Q: What if I have other questions?

A: Please feel free to call the office for a friendly, no-obligation chat. If you call and have to leave a message on the answering machine, Jo will return your call as soon as possible and will not divulge the nature of the call if anyone else answers. Alternatively, email Jo detailing your problem at Jo@WeShouldTalk.co.uk.
